Bev, Shall you be taking your special little girl to have her hearing tested to see what degree of hearing she has?
You could try various dog whistles and possibly a can with some stones in or really anything that you can think of that would be easy for you to have at hand. It is really a case of trial and error as it could be volume as well as pitch that is required. Let us know how you get on. Regards Sue & Jess
If I were you I would try to find a good training class near you and this will help you get her solcialised more. I would also suggest that you explain fully about your dogs issues and possibly go and watch a class before you begin.
In the mean time try using a halti, gentle leader or something like that to help you control the dog in public. I fully appreciate how you feel but unfortunately by avoiding walking in the day light is only going to allow the problem to stay there and you will not be able to get over it.
Good luck and please, let me know how you get on. If you want a more detailed reply email me on heidihole1@sky.com.
Regards Sue & Jess
Hi What a great web site i am glad i have found you . About two tears ago we adopted a lovely white boxer who had been badly abused/beaten by her last owners, she has no hearing at all , she is lovely with us [my children are 15 and 6 years and she gets on very well with my other dogs and cats. The only main problem we have with her is she loves walks but hates other animals and people ,so much so we have to walk her when it is dark as she gets so distressed it is a shame as it would be lovely to walk her during the day time like i do with my other dogs. I would be grateful for any help you can give us
We fostered a pregnant boder collie from a local rescue so her pups could be raised in a home environment. One of the pups turned out to be deaf and we decided to keep her ourselves. She is now 16wk and getting on well using sign. Our only difficulty is attracting her attention so we are considering a vibrating collar. However in the last week or so she appears to respond to certain sounds, I accept that she is never going to have normal hearing but it would be wonderful if we could find something that she can hear for attracting attention. Any advice would be greatly appreciated or suggestions as to how we can have her hearing tested.
Does he like toys? Try to find something that takes his interest. I would really try to teach him to watch you before you go and let him off the lead in an open space. You could use a flexi lead or a long line to get him used to coming back to you. You can only do so much and although Jess does go off lead I am selective to where I do let her off lead. Good luck
Hi, I adopted my bordercollie 'Timo' 2 weeks agao and he's making good progress, he is sometimes even off the lead. But how do I get him back at the moment I have to chase him. However this is not a game but supposedly training! He is very willful and does not care much about treats when outside. We would appreciate some advice with this problem.
Best regards Ruth & Timo
Hi, this is more a message for Louise in the hope she reads it. I am just wondering whether she has adopted Sasha from Glasgow DT? If so, I adopted my deaf dog Horus from West Calder last year, and I was wondering if you would like to get in touch for more local support? Have been through a lot with my boy but have learnt an awful lot in the process! If you do, email me at dollyanna at hotmail dot com :-)
Ian - It is imposible to diagnose something like this over emails, you really could do with calling someone who is a dog trainer, behviourist etc and let them come and actually see what happens. What area do you live in and if I know someone in that area I can give you their contact details. You can email me heidihole1@sky.com.
